One of the greatest appreciations I have of these islands is being allowed to learn more, as my curiosity remains abound. I am reminded to my first design project and cringe at my naive interpretation of Hawaii, something that can only be remedied by looking back. One of the ways I’ve been able to deepen my understanding of these islands is to work with local artists and artisans. I’m humbled when they choose to take a bit of time to give me a glimpse of their perspective. A perspective that I wouldn’t have as I was raised elsewhere. One of those artists that I am very inspired by is Jalene Kanani Bell. I first worked with her when she was repp’ing carpet for a national brand. In 2008 she launched her own textile line and in 2009 I was honored to use one of her carpets for a hotel project I developed in Waikiki. Jalene was born in Hawaii and her family has been here for generations. She studied hula as a keiki, promoted Hula through out the States as a teenage, and is a true ambassador of Aloha. A combination of her heritage, background, drive and artistic talents, Jalene has created a line of Decor called Noho Home (www.nohohomehawaii.com). It is a sophisticated interpretation of modern Hawaii. There is value of being able to work with local artists. Not only does it support the local economy but it advances a respectful knowledge of these islands histories and diverse cultures. I have the opportunity to pass on what I have learned, from people like her, though my designs. I hope that if I stay on these islands till I am 103, I will continue to see myself as a visitor. A mantra for our islands that are small and with limited local resources. We are the most remote islands in the world and though most building materials and furniture are shipped in from other places, anytime I can integrate local furniture or re-purpose existing materials, it feels like I am paying respect to the lands. It also lends to a more unique story, I think of a neighbor whose home was transported from Waikiki to Monsarrat Avenue during the hotel boom of the 1950s & 1960s. This home could have been demolished and placed in the landfill but was raised on a truck bed and transplanted 1 mile from its original location for a new family to create memories in. We can’t all afford to re-root a new home though resourcefulness comes in many scales. Another option is to invest in local manufacturing as much as possible. Local manufacturing is more environmentally sustainable, especially when using local materials. It also increases and diversifies jobs in the local economy. I recently connected with Danny Ovryn, the founder of Rust & Root. Rust & Root is a local woodworking shop based in Waimanalo. They create furniture with wood harvested from fallen trees of Oahu. Danny’s inspiration for his industry are clear “I chose to make furniture because I’ve always loved working with my hands, and I crave the freedom to be creative… One of my greatest goals is to provide opportunities for young people in our community to start a career in the trades… (In) order for that to be possible, the manufacturing has to stay local, or those opportunities won’t existing (here).” Every time I can specify locally made furniture in my designs, I have the pride of giving back. Wow! Exhibit at Bishop Museum. It was so cool to see arts of different backgrounds celebrating hawaii. It was a little edgy, a little retro, a little modern and a lot cool. Baker’s work has the influence of 80s punk rock combined with surf culture. A collision of the urban edge of a big city and vintage Hawaii. I love this illustration with Diamondhead in the background. It reminds me of the days when I had time between projects and would I stop by the beach, still in my work clothes, and let the sand say aloha to my toes. She is the founder of Punky Aloha Studio (great name). I’ve seen her work on murals, art shops, local magazines including Honolulu Magazine and Hawaii Magazine. She is currently working on two picture books for Harper Kids and Harper Collins. I’m looking forward to ordering these books to share with my son. Tuiasoa’s work is a graceful and powerful voice to the Hawaiian culture. Her balance of color, pattern and play against positive and negative space are masterful. Listfield is based in LA. He grew up in Boston and studied in Dartmouth College. Manoa falls trails re-opened recently and I had a chance to visit. Being surrounded by the rainforest, after 15 years in hawaii I appreciate the new discoveries, like the outsider in this image.
